The Painting and Drawing concentrations of the MFA in Studio Arts program embrace a broad scope of practices within the fields today. Building upon its extensive history and multiple traditions, this program emphasizes the continuing relevance and innovative potential of painting and drawing in the context of contemporary culture and new media.
Emphasis is placed on artistic experimentation as part of the search to locate individual practice within an historical and contemporary critical context. You will engage in exploring all aspects of the disciplines including traditional oil and acrylic on canvas and wet and dry media on paper, as well as extended practices, process-oriented material explorations, installation based approaches, conceptual approaches and new modes of figuration and abstraction.
The studio course meets weekly under the supervision of studio faculty throughout the two-year residency, offering you the opportunity to engage in critical dialogue concerning issues relevant to your practice and professional life as an artist. The program culminates in the production and exhibition of a mature body of work.
