The Film Production concentration of the the MFA in Studio Arts program promotes an expanded notion of cinema. Emphasizing innovation and experimentation, the program facilitates all forms of image support, including animation, film and digital-based media, and examines various forms of exhibition from traditional single-channel projection to installation. You will be encouraged to explore the diverse theoretical frameworks, processes and methodologies of contemporary moving image practices. This program is ideal for media-makers committed to an independent studio art practice.
The weekly studio course is conceived as a ‘laboratories de cinéma,’ dedicated to an ongoing dialogue and critique of the processes, methodologies and practices of contemporary cinema. You will work closely with faculty to develop individualized research programs, which culminate in the production of a single thesis film or a coherent body of work with a substantial written component that provides a context for creative production. Thesis development begins in first term and typically extends over a three-year period.
